The Gags' Death in Buzzards' Gulch, 1978

What a cover!! why, why can we no longer see album covers like this anymore?

Unfortunately a one-off from this set of Brits, this LP mixes very effectively blues and pop rock songs like David Bowie excelled at composing in a nice enjoyable mix.  There is none to little progressive but no matter, for those who love rock, the mortituri salutant, or something like that... or, as I always used to paraphrase in the famous phrase spoken to Caesars for centuries: those who are about to rock, salute you!

  2. Gags were a very popular pub band who were active in Manchester in the late 1970's. All 4 of the guys were originally from Leeds, something that became an issue when I took two of them with me to Old Trafford for a Manchester United v Leeds United football game. It was reasonably convivial until the goals started flying in! My team (Man Utd) eventually won 5-0 but my guests had left well before the end and barely spoke to me for a few weeks afterwards. I think Gags reminded people of the newly-emerging Dire Straits but although guitarist Jerry McLaughlin was an above-average player (and yes that was his real name)they didn't have a songwriter of Mark Knopfler's calibre, so it all petered out eventually. The album captures some of their strengths and a lot of their weaknesses but suffers from a fairly flat production. Am grateful for the post - just the sight of that cover brought back a few memories!

    1. oh wow, that's so cool to hear, I love stories like these
Yes, this band suffered from underrecognition like so many others of the time, undeservedly
I'm sorry, I think this LP is much better than the Dire Straits in full seriousness
