Guitar Worshop in Rio, 1991

Here in Rio as expected we have the light tropical salsa etc. styles of music and very little of the fusion that excites me so much. On the other hand, compositions are very strong here and there. The amazing Ulisses Rocha with his Yasei no Kaze:

I don't normally like that rhythm because it's so cliched from the Brazilian jazz I got tired of way back when in a past lifetime, but here the composition is very good and dare I say it quite catchy.

I'll get back to this artist a bit later.

  1. Dear Julian, firstly congratulations to your amazing blog and hard work. You are always full of surprises, sending all this beautiful music out into the world for all of us to discover and enjoy. Keep up the good work.
I really enjoyed the workshop in Rio album, it has some amazing guitarists (all of them I knew already) and some great songs and interpretations. Unfortunately your description made me cringe. The way I see it is that Salsa is not brazilian and does not exist on this album. Most songs are some form of Samba , with one or two Chorinhos. I also can't detect any Brazilian Jazz, the music here would be described as Musica Instrumental. Brazilian Jazz is a very different story. The song you like and posted is for me the weakest of the whole album, why? Because like you said its full of cliché, the most watered down and Americanized form of Brazilian music, as sterile as the LA Westcoast sound of the eighties. But then again, music comes in many forms and we all like something else and that's what makes the world such an amazing place. Looking forward to your future offerings. Merry Christmas to you and your family

    3. Hi Julian, (belated) merry Christmas! Thank you very much for sharing this album, I dig Brazilian music. Here we have the great João Bosco, and the magnificent Raphael Rabello, considered as one of the best choro guitarists ever.

Not crazy about all the tunes but there are some gems, so thanks again and have a great end of year!
