Interest in Mellotrons seems to have had a resurgence in recent years. Given how problematic they can be to operate and the cost of maintaining such a complicated instrument, I imagine most people are reproducing it on a synth. It is a really is a unique sound, what Capt. Beedheart once referred to as “abused throat.” Sometimes it has a wonderful eerie otherworldly gothic feel to it which I've always liked.
